Lifeguard, No One on Duty

The word on the tower says LIFEGUARD. The small sign beneath it says no lifeguard is on duty. I liked the two sharing one frame, the promise and the absence, under a hard noon sun in South Beach.

A yellow lifeguard tower with blue and orange trim stands on pale sand, sharp against a blurred turquoise sea and pale blue sky. An orange buoy hangs from the rail, the word LIFEGUARD is painted on the beam, and a small sign reads no lifeguard on duty. The tower casts a hard shadow across the sand.

The word LIFEGUARD sits right above the small sign that says nobody is on duty. The tower keeps its promise to an empty beach. I kept it sharp and let the sea go soft, so the saturated colour and the pale sand could settle against each other. The shadow lies on the sand like a second, quieter tower.
